Haunted Highgate
2023
Starting with a site like the abandoned Overground station in Highgate, London invites a number of emotions and aesthetics that draw off of the town and surrounding area, all of which is known to be haunted. Historical incidents, folk tales, and the nearby cemetery feed into a series of ghost stories told around town. Haunted Highgate reimagines the derelict location and functions as a public park by day and museum experience by night. The collection of pavilions and visual spaces each tell the various tales grounded in the area, and are connected both through the existing abandoned train station canopy and a series of unnerving reflective poles, meant to preserve and extend the claustrophobic nature of the site. Together with the lighting and sound design of the project, Haunted Highgate comes together to create feelings of discomfort, disorientation, and surveillance in an altogether intriguing experience for the user both during the day and at night.
