Cucina Sociale
2023
Located in Marsala, Sicily, Cucina Sociale, or "Social Kitchen" is a response to growing migrant populations in southern Italy through its efforts in combining Italian, Romanian, Moroccan, and Tunisian styles of cooking and eating spaces. Research began with examining demographic information and learning more about hands-on educational experiences that can effectively bridge the gap between cultures. Initial inspiration came from Sarah Wigglesworth and Jeremy Till's drawings of dining tables, and from there the concept spread to become stretches of countertop connecting raised and lowered floors, allowing for multiple techniques and postures to be incorporated as the kitchen is used and ultimately creating opportunities to share and understand foreign and local culture through the experience of food.

With the high volume of different cultures converging on Sicily, finding ways to mix and blend communities while still celebrating their differences came down to one commonality shared by humanity: a love of food.

FINAL SITE ORGANIZATION

Different dining and cooking techniques, as well as cultural perspectives on ingredients and food groups allowed the design to progress around the idea of a singular eyeline supplemented by an undulating floor. With these elevation changes, conversation, teaching, and learning can cross the boundaries of cultural borders.
